Applying social media tools into my professions

I use social media tools everyday. It becomes an important part of my life. In my profession, as a social worker, social media tools become more essential which improves the quality of services and efficiency of work. The most useful tools for me are Google, Wikipedia, Facebook, Linkedin, Preize, Diigo, mindmeister, YouTube.

The article called “It’s ‘Better to Be Informed’ About Tech Tools” published in national association of social workers news. The main topic is social media is playing a prominent role in social work profession’s Future. Tools like Wikipedia, an online social media encyclopedia that allows anyone to edit entries that’s normally not an acceptable source for journalism but seems a fitting source for this topic, offers this explanation: Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue.

“Social media is more engaging, more of a conversation,” said Rogers. “Instead of just pushing news out, people can reply. And, as soon as I have a headline I can post it, as opposed to a printed publication.” She said she regularly receives feedback from the school’s nearly1, 100 Twitter followers and 800 Facebook fans.

“Social media is a great way to bring people to our website and Contact, our online magazine, and promote news and events,” Rogers said in an interview with NASW News. A banner announces to visitors of her school’s website, ssw.unc.edu: “Follow the UNC School of Social Work on your favorite social media sites.” Clicking on the banner reveals a list of better known social media tools: Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and iTunes.

Rogers also appreciates that social media is cheap. Facebook and Twitter accounts are free; so is hosting a blog. When the school moved Contact magazine online last year to ssw.unc.edu/contact, they realized significant cost savings by not having to pay for the monthly printing and mailing of each issue.

Faculty members also have gotten into the social media game. For example, Anna Scheyett, UNC School of Social Work’s associate dean for academic affairs, has a blog on social work leadership at sswleadership.blogspot.com. In a story about social media published online last year in Contact, Scheyett said, “I think blogging is a great way to disseminate information and offer a secondary education around what social work is.”

Facebook gradually become every teenager daily life’s routine. I heard from my social worker friends that they usually create a group to exchange each other’s idea, comments about activity and specific questions. They share photos, articles, music together which saves a lot time and cost efficiency. Facebook solves distance problems also. When clients move to another country, they can still keep in touch. Facebook is easy to handle with. Many different functions such as games, messages, sharing resources, chatting lively and movies are totally free. Facebook also helps social worker to know better clients’ background, personality, and hobbies and so on.

Facebook is an online social networking platform. The multiple functionalized social media tool offers users with great resources, latest news, popular news and all kinds of information. The other tool I’d like to compare is second life, a virtual life world. Safety issues is always most important. Facebook has so called privacy preferences, but still some peoples’ personal information is stolen. Virtual world has the same weak point.

Second Life has many advanced features which I appreciate a lot. One of the functions is lecture. It provides opportunities that wherever people are accessed to internet, they can enjoy the lectures. Recently, the open lectures provide by Harvard, Oxford and other top universities to the students all over the world. For me, I benefit a lot from the online courses. In the perspective of sharing resources, virtual world has a strong advantage for its cost-efficiency and saving time.

The purpose of Second Life is connecting people no matter who they are. People can hide their real identity and do whatever legally online. They talk, share information, do business, and make friends and so on. It suits Finnish society a lot for most of the people live far away from each other and their shyness. Second Life is not popular in China, because of the culture reasons that people prefer to talk face to face.

Facebook and Second Life are both popular among young people. Facebook has much easier and more practical functions for add the people you know. Virtual world has more attractive activities let us enjoy being someone else. By creating a person someone wants to be realizes many peoples’ dreams. Choose the one which suits us best and let the social media tools make life easier and better.
